Project #5: The Ottawa Safety Council – Volunteer Check-in

The Ottawa Safety Council is a not-for-profit organization offering an array of safe road services to the residents of Ottawa, such as: Motorcycle Training, Crossing Guards, BestFit Car seat program, Pedestrian and Bike Safety. Founded as a not-for-profit, non-government organization in 1967, we have enjoyed a well-established reputation as a leader in safety education. Our mission is to deliver best-in-class road safe services, education, training and awareness throughout our communities.

The challenge

Core to delivering Crossing Guard services to the City of Ottawa and itโ€™s School Boards, the OSC has a need to ensure that every certified crossing has a guard. If the guard is not on duty, it is up to the OSC to immediately find a replacement/fill in.

There are almost 240 locations in the City that need to be staffed by our crossing guards ย – we added over 30 new locations just in 2019!

Our challenge is in finding a way to see, at a glance, if any one of the 240 locations on the above map is missing a crossing guard. We would like to produce some sort of mobile app that allows for Crossing Guards to โ€œCheck-inโ€ once they reach their corner – and for that information to appear in real time on a tracking map back at OSC HQ.
