Project #5: The Ottawa Safety Council – Volunteer Check-in

The Ottawa Safety Council is a not-for-profit organization offering an array of safe road services to the residents of Ottawa, such as: Motorcycle Training, Crossing Guards, BestFit Car seat program, Pedestrian and Bike Safety. Founded as a not-for-profit, non-government organization in 1967, we have enjoyed a well-established reputation as a leader in safety education. Our mission is to deliver best-in-class road safe services, education, training and awareness throughout our communities.

The challenge

Core to delivering Crossing Guard services to the City of Ottawa and it’s School Boards, the OSC has a need to ensure that every certified crossing has a guard. If the guard is not on duty, it is up to the OSC to immediately find a replacement/fill in.

There are almost 240 locations in the City that need to be staffed by our crossing guards  – we added over 30 new locations just in 2019!

Our challenge is in finding a way to see, at a glance, if any one of the 240 locations on the above map is missing a crossing guard. We would like to produce some sort of mobile app that allows for Crossing Guards to “Check-in” once they reach their corner – and for that information to appear in real time on a tracking map back at OSC HQ.
